Abstract:

This subject introduces the general field of psychology, its scientific and professional development. It examines some important areas of psychology including learning, developmental psychology, social psychology, personality, health psychology and psychological disorders.
The subject is specifically designed for students who contemplate careers in health and human services.
Students should note that this subject does not contribute to an Australian Psychological Society accredited major in psychology.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to outline the principal systems and theories of psychology
- be able to discuss the basic principles of psychological research
- be able to describe the basic processes of learning
- be able to discuss human development across the lifespan
- be able to explain and analyse the key influences of the social environment on human behaviour
- be able to outline the major theories of personality
- be able to describe the psychological aspects of health and illness
- be able to identify the major forms of psychological disorders
In addition, students will achieve a selection of the following:
- be able to explain aspects of emotion and motivation
- be able to discuss variations in consciousness
- be able to discuss major theories of memory
- be able to explain the basic principles of psychological testing
- be able to describe major forms of psychotherapy
- be able to explain the application of psychological principles to the workplace

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- The scope and history of psychology - Research methods in psychology - Learning - Development across the lifespan - Social psychology - Personality theory and assessment - Health psychology - Psychological disorders The subject will also cover some of the following topics: - Memory - Variations in consciousness - Psychological testing - Psychotherapy - Industrial / organisational psychology
