Abstract:
Current knowledge of the epidemiology and clinical practice recommendations for the diagnosis and management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are investigated in this subject.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Place the epidemiology of COPD within the historical and world wide context;
Discuss current Australian recommendations for diagnosis and management of COPD;
Describe the differential diagnosis of obstructive pulmonary diseases;
Understand the respiratory pathology underlying the major 'types' of COPD;
Design a multi-disciplinary pulmonary rehabilitation program suitable for patients with mild, moderate and severe COPD;
Explain the disease process to patients and family members and the rationale for pulmonary rehabilitation processes.
