Abstract:
This subject introduces students to sociology and how a sociological approach can be applied to provide a deeper understanding of current issues relating to health, illness and health care. Through the analysis of theory and research, students will engage with the various ways in which the social organisation of society shapes health care delivery and institutions, patterns of illness and health, and individual experiences of ill health.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to apply sociological concepts and theories to contemporary health issues.
- Be able to explain the influence of social structure and human agency on the organisation of health care and health outcomes.
- be able to demonstrate the significance of a sociological approach in making sense of health and medical issues
- be able to demonstrate skills in the written presentation of an argument, including the ways in which sociologists incorporate and acknowledge the ideas of other writers
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Studying health and illness from a sociological perspective.
- The social organisation of health care.
- Inequalities in health and illness.
- Social experiences of health and illness.
