Abstract:
This subject addresses current social debates concerning gender and the family through a comparative historical cross cultural perspective. Students are introduced to a wide range of research drawn from the humanities, and social and human sciences. Particular attention is given to the various theoretical perspectives and methodological issues involved.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify the main theoretical approaches to the study of gender relations
- be able to describe historical shifts in attitudes to women and family structures
- be able to identify the ways in which social institutions reproduce and regulate gender and sexuality,
- be able to relate academic debates about gender and family to the practices of daily life in different cultures, both urban and rural
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- a comparative overview of the history, variety and diversity of family and gender relations, e.g. nuclear and extended family structures in Europe and the Middle East; changes in Australian family structures over time; cultural conceptions of relatedness, gender and family responsibilities - the sociology of sexuality and its relationship to social structures and cultural practices - the politics of family, the family values movement and governmentality - the sociology of gender, violence, masculinity and power
