CSU Discipline Area: Spatial Science (SPASC)

Abstract:

This subject extends the study of GIS. It develops advanced skills in the complex modelling of spatial data. Subject modules include: 1) A review of analysis functions, 2) Selected advanced analysis, 3) Modelling and flowcharting, 4) Raster analysis. The subject extends the students theoretical and analytical capabilities. The practical component forms an integral part in developing the necessary skills in GIS modelling. The subject contains a total estimated workload of 150 hours.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to:

Identify GIS functionality essential to GIS applications;
Identify and formalise GIS analysis methods using flowcharting techniques;
Undertake cartographic modelling, analysis of continuous surfaces, network analysis and discrete/continuous raster analysis;
Critically evaluate published GIS literature;
use the collection methods of point sample data;
apply the methods available in the creation of continuous data;
Compare modelling in raster and vector;
work within the limitations of GIS data structures in modelling.

The subject will cover the following topics:

Review of analysis functions;
Advanced analysis;
Modelling and flowcharting;
Raster modelling.
