SPA414 Current Issues In Gis (8)

CSU Discipline Area: Spatial Science (SPASC)

Duration: One session

Abstract:

This subject covers a wide range of current, new and interesting topics closely related to GIS. Information has always been the cornerstone of effective decisions. However, more recently, analysis of mapped data has become an important part of understanding and managing geographic space. This movement from “where is what” (descriptive) to "so what and why" (prescriptive) has set the stage for entirely new geospatial concepts and tools.  This subject deals a range of new topics in GIS including those that have led to a much wider use of this technology in science, government, business, and industry.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

This subject matter will change year to year, but will always reflect current emphases in the development of GIS. This offering will focus on three major topics: infrastructures for web GIS and data sharing, new data models and structure, and geocomputation.

  1. Society and web mapping;
  2. Online decision support systems and stakeholder GIS;
  3. Metadata and infrastructures for data sharing;
  4. Wireless applications protocol (WAP);
  5. Spatial uncertainty;
  6. Spatio-temporal GIS;
  7. Multi-scale GIS;
  8. Integrating multimedia with geolibraries;
  9. Object oriented GIS;
  10. Cellular automata and agent-based modelling;
  11. Spatial data mining and geo visualisation;
  12. Expert systems;
  13. Fuzzy logic;
  14. Fractals;
  15. Neural networks;
  16. Genetic algorithms;
  17. Heuristic search.

Specialised Resources

Students are expected to be able to gain access for a significant amount of the session to an IBM PC or one of its many variants.
