Abstract:
This subject focuses on the application of theory to the detailed exploration of real language samples. Students will develop their ability to analyse existing transcriptions of ordinary, institutional and disordered interactions using a variety of linguistic methodologies. Students will apply the knowledge and skills they develop through the analysis of existing transcribed data to the analysis of real-time interaction between people.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to:
Transcribe ordinary and disordered talk using both selected IPA diacritics and conversation analysis transcription guidelines.
Analyse, interpret and discuss spoken and written language samples using a range of tools including: ethnography, conversation analysis, critical discourse analysis and computerised analysis software tools.
Provide feedback on the analyses they complete to diverse audiences, in both non-technical and technical language.
Analyse their own writing for textual cohesion and grammatical clarity.
Identify areas for future personal/professional development of spoken interaction skills.
