Abstract:
This subject builds upon the awareness of students about the culturally and socially bound nature of human communication (SPH 105 and SPH106) by extending the range of their community-based therapeutic experiences. Students are introduced to counselling theory, voice production, service delivery models, and continue to practise self-reflection and professional development in their community practice placements. Students continue development of professional therapy skills, processes and procedures.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
In a range of settings, be able to:
- apply culturally and socially appropriate communication assessment and therapeutic processes and practices in the domains of child and adolescent speech and language impairments at a novice level;
- discuss the primacy of human relationship as central to the therapeutic relationship;
- describe a variety of professional service delivery models;
- describe the principles of health promotion from a professional service perspective;
- briefly describe commonly used theoretical and practical principles in counselling;
- describe the principles of normal voice production and speech pathology practice in voice disorders.

This is principally a clinical education subject.
At a more advanced level than Year 1, students are introduced in experiential placements to the key elements in therapeutic communication practice, supported by orientation, briefing and debriefing.
