Abstract:
This subject introduces students to the study of stuttering and its remediation. They learn about the nature of the disorder, theories of the cause of stuttering, and treatment options. In considering treatment issues, students explore the principles, pros and cons of Evidence Based Practice in speech pathology contexts.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Explain theoretical positions and practical clinical choices with reference to theoretical and empirical stuttering literature;
Recognise and solve problems related to the management of stuttering;
Develop measurement and other clinical skills necessary for competent management of stuttering;
Understand the pros and cons of evidence-based practice in speech pathology.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Evidence based practice in speech pathology; Description and epidemiology of stuttering; Developmental stages of stuttering, treatment styles and modes; Clinical measurement, concepts of generalisation and maintenance, and management of early stuttering; Management of advanced stuttering, stuttering in late childhood and early adolescence;
