Abstract:
The subject examines the relationship between science and society, focusing in particular upon the impact of technological change on society. Students are to select one topic from a range of choices for an in-depth case study.

Student-type: students in final (3rd or 4th) year of their course &/or doing honours &/or post-graduate students
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate the 'meaning' of science in contemporary culture
- be able to demonstrate the main issues relating to the role of scientists in society
- be able to demonstrate the social impact of technological change
- be able to demonstrate present-day concerns relating to the application of science and technology.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
1. The Sociology of Science (scientific norms, science as ideology) 2. Case Study Materials (examination of issues to be selected for the case study) 3. Technology and Social Change (political economy of science and technology) 4. Selected Issues in Science, Technology and Society (such as the environment, socio-economic & cultural issues, industry-specific examples, etc.)
