Abstract:

The subject deals with issues relating to the social structures and development of rural societies in the advanced economies, with particular emphasis upon Australia. Aspects of rural social inequality, patterns of community interaction and power relations, rural culture and ideology, and global processes affecting agriculture are analysed.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to recognise the similarities and differences between rural communities in Australia,
Be able to analyse the social structure of rural communities,
Be able to explain the extent and causes of rural social inequality,
Be able to assess the particular needs of social groups in rural Australia,
Appreciate the elements, and meaning, of Australian rural culture,
Understand the impact of wider social processes on regional social organisation
