Abstract:

This subject surveys the biblical sources and major historical developments of Christian thinking concerning the claim that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ of God. The primary focus is on central sources and methods that have shaped christological debates since 1800 CE. The subject includes critical assessments of the quests for the historical Jesus and arguments for Christ being both human and divine. The meaning of salvation, the atonement, and the resurrection is explored. Further contemporary themes are examined, including Christology and religious pluralism, liberation Christologies, contextual Christologies, and the present Christ.
