Abstract:
This guided reading subject consolidates work completed in earlier Hebrew studies (THL102 and THL241). It focuses on selected texts from the Pentateuch (Genesis 1-4; Exodus 3; 13-15) or the prophetic material (Amos 1:1-8; 2:4-3:8; 4:1-6; 7:10-8:3; 9:11-15; Isaiah 5:1-7; 6:1-13; 39:1-40:14; 44:1-5; 45:15-17; Jeremiah 1; 23; 29). To facilitate translation, literary analysis, exegesis and interpretation of selected texts, text-critical problems, grammar and the literary qualities of these texts are explored.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate mastery of Hebrew grammar, linguistic and literary devices
- be able to demonstrate facility in undertaking exegesis of Hebrew texts
- be able to appreciate the finer nuances of translation into English and to support translation choices
- be able to appreciate and to critique the exegetical and translation work of others
- be able to discuss text-critical issues
- be able to engage with critical scholarship and to apply critical methodology appropriately
- be able to employ exegesis to pursue broader research topics
- be able to demonstrate self-guided learning, including research, writing and communication skills
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Detailed attention to selected Hebrew texts from the Pentateuch and prophetic literature - Issues related to textual criticism - Selected grammatical and linguistic issues - Selected literary issues - Nuanced translation work - Appreciation and critique of relevant Old Testament scholarship - Application of schools of criticism
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.
The purpose of this residential school is to provide students with the fundamental linguistic skills needed for the successful completion of this subject. Activitives to be undertaken include guided spoken exercises, lectures, tutorial presentations, and tests.
