Abstract:
This subject explores the development of the Christian understanding of God as Trinity and its relationship to worship, faith and doctrine. It investigates both the biblical witness to the revelation of God in Jesus Christ and classical controversies about the implications of this for responsible speech about God. Special attention is given to a variety of contemporary reinterpretations of trinitarian thought and their implications for ethics, community, spirituality and interfaith dialogue.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate familiarity with the biblical origins of the Christian understanding of God as Trinity
- be able to identify and discuss the major historical developments of Christian reflection on the doctrine of God
- be able to reflect critically on a variety of classical and contemporary theological interpretations of trinitarian faith
- be able to show the practical importance of trinitarianism for Christian spiritual life and practice, including interfaith dialogue, and
- be able to demonstrate self-guided learning, including research, writing and communication skills.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- the biblical foundations of the Christian doctrine of God as Trinity
- the early emergence of trinitarian themes in the Christian debate about God
- classical development of trinitarian doctrine with special reference to the Cappadocian theologians and Augustine
- some recent expressions of trinitarian thought and their theological, ethical, spiritual, missional and interfaith implications
