Abstract:

The aim of this four-day compulsory residential school is to introduce students to the study of ageing, spirituality and pastoral studies. It also covers the core skills and competencies crucial to working with older people in a professional and ethical manner. All students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, or the Master of Arts Ageing and Pastoral Studies) are required to attend the residential either before commencing their first semester of enrolment, if beginning in the autumn semester, or prior to their second semester of enrolment if they commence in the spring semester.

Graduate Certificate in Ageing and Pastoral Studies Graduate Diploma of Ageing and Pastoral Studies Master of Arts (Ageing and Pastoral Studies)

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the development of the discipline of ageing and pastoral studies;
- be able to articulate at the basic level ethical issues characteristic of this area of study;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the core skills and competencies crucial to working with older people in a professional and ethical manner;
- be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the practice of assessment of spirituality and mental health issues in ageing as they relate to spiritual and pastoral care;
- be able to articulate the methods of enquiry appropriate for the discipline.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- the focus and development of the discipline of ageing and pastoral studies; - the professional and ethical issues characteristic of the area of study; - essential skills and competencies for working with older people in pastoral contexts; - understanding and practice of assessment of spirituality and mental health in ageing as it is related to spiritual and pastoral care; and - the literature and methods of enquiry appropriate for the discipline.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 4 day residential school.

The aim of this four-day compulsory residential school is to introduce students to the study of ageing, spirituality and pastoral studies through lectures, tutorials, group discussion, practical skills, role play and individual student consultation. All students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, or the Master of Arts Ageing and Pastoral Studies) are required to attend the residential either before commencing their first semester of enrolment, if beginning in the autumn semester, or prior to their second semester of enrolment if they commence in the spring semester.
