Abstract:
This subject considers ageing people in the context of their family and social milieux. The significance of relationships for the well being of older people is examined, as are approaches to pastoral, ritual, ethical and spiritual dimensions of care. Selected contexts of ageing are explored including migrants, singles, gays, and indigenous persons. Contexts of care studied include family and non-family carers and the opportunities and difficulties that arise. Appropriate pastoral responses to stressful issues such as isolation, abuse, and homelessness are examined.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify needs for pastoral care among older people and their families
- be able to recognise signs of older people at risk of neglect or abuse
- be able to provide appropriate pastoral care to older people and their families, relevant to their community and social needs
- demonstrate self-guided learning, including research, writing and communication skills, through the preparation of written material in accordance with assessment criteria
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Relationships in later life: negotiating changing relationships both personal and institutional - Issues of social and spiritual isolation - Vulnerable older people - Abuse and neglect of older people - Faith communities and ageing people - Cultural contexts of ageing: migrants, singles, gays, indigenous persons - Contexts of care: family and non-family carers, tensions and opportunities - Older people as carers - Pastoral care for stressful contexts in family and community: abuse, homelessness, and disability - Ritual, ethics and spirituality
