Abstract:
This subject provides students with the opportunity to reflect on the nature and purpose of Religious and Values Education. It addesses the issue: How religion and values are taught in a multi-cultural and increasingly secular society? The subject examines a variety of responses to this question, reflecting the history of RaVE in Australia and drawing on research from across the world. Students will engage critically with recent literature in the field, its implications for curriculum design and classroom practice.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to discuss, analyse and reflect critically on differing views regarding the nature and purpose of religious and values education
- be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of relevant literature on recent trends in religious and values education
- be able to articulate an in-depth understanding of the distinctive role of religious and values education within the curriculum
- be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the history of religious and values education in Australia
- be able to engage critically with the scholarly debate regarding the nature of truth and religious diversity
- be able to articulate and evaluate critically the political, social and religious influences on religious and values education in Australia
- be able to discuss critically the place of religious and values education in independent, religious and secular schools
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- The nature and purpose of RaVE: critical and theoretical perspectives
- Theories of educational and moral development
- The distinctive role of RaVE within the curriculum
- The history of RaVE in Australia
- Recent trends in RaVE in Australia and internationally
- The nature of truth and religious diversity
- Religion in Australia in the 21st century
