Abstract:
This subject engages critically with major figures and movements in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The scope of the subject includes an examination of Schleiermacher and Cultural Protestantism; the New, Continued and Third Quests for the Historical Jesus; Neo-Reformation theologies; theologies of God and culture; Catholic theologies; theologies in the Orthodox traditions; liberation, feminist and contextual theologies; and choices from other selected themes. From this suite students will engage critically with a selection of these theologies in relation to their contexts, tasks and methods.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of a selection of contemporary theologies and the contexts in which they emerged;
be able to evaluate critically selected theologies in reference to their contexts, tasks and methods;
be able to discern and evaluate critically the contribution of particular theologies to their global and historical contexts;
be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of a chosen contemporary theological figure or movement; and
be able to demonstrate independent research and writing skills.
