THL517 Advanced Biblical Exegesis (16)

Abstract:

This subject involves detailed exegesis of a portion of the Bible, in its original language, at postgraduate level. The student will engage with contemporary critical views of biblical interpretation, and undertake a thorough exegetical and hermeneutical exploration of a specific biblical passage. The student will translate the selected passage and examine a range of critical issues (text-critical issues, literary and historical context, literary structure, relevant critical approach(es) (e.g., form, narrative, sociological, ideological, etc.) as appropriate to the chosen passage, together with engagement with select hermeneutical questions raised by the passage.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to undertake detailed exegesis of a portion of the Bible, in its original language, at postgraduate level;

be able to provide a critical analysis of the hermeneutical issues involved in an advanced reading of the biblical text;

be able to provide a detailed exegesis of a chosen biblical passage, in which methods specified are applied to the text at postgraduate level;

be able to demonstrate appropriate academic engagement and discussion skills through interaction with the subject co-ordinator;

be able to demonstrate independent research, writing and communication skills through preparation and presentation of substantial exegetical essay.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Selection of biblical passage: Student and subject co-ordinator agree upon a passage from the Bible on which the student is to present a major exegetical paper - passages may be selected from the Hebrew Scriptures, the Apocrypha, or the Greek New Testament;
Guided reading: The subject coordinator and the student will agree on readings appropriate to the student's topic which encompass broader hermeneutical concerns as well as relevant exegetical methods. Such reading might include attention to text-critical issues, literary and historical context, literary structure, relevant critical approach(es) (e.g., form, narrative, sociological, ideological, etc.) as appropriate to the chosen passage.
Submission of substantial essay: Students will develop a substantial essay which attends to the exegetical and hermeneutical issues involved in the interpretation of the selected passage.
