TRM516 The Management of Tourism Events (8)

Abstract:

Events are playing an increasingly important role in the development of regional and capital city tourism destinations. This subject develops the practical, applied skills necessary to organise and stage successful events. Issues relating to idea generation, event planning, project coordination, the marketing of events, sourcing of funding and on-site operations of events are discussed.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- understand and identify the characteristics which differentiate a tourism event from other events;
- understand and appreciate the significant role the staging of tourism events plays in the political agenda;
- understand and appreciate the significant role events play in the development of a destinations tourism resource base;
- demonstrate the management competencies necessary for the successful staging of a tourism event.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- defining special tourism events - political significance of special tourism events - special tourism events as tourist attractions - importance of tourism events to urban and regional tourism development - impacts on host communities and tourist community - capacity of community resources - creating the special tourism event - planning the special tourism event - objective setting - organising the special tourism event (ie management structure) - marketing the special tourism event - financing the special tourism event - applications for grants and sponsorship - production of bids for the opportunity to stage particular tourist events - staffing the special tourism event - volunteer management - evaluating the special tourism events
