CSU Discipline Area: Design and Visual Production (DSVIS)

Abstract:

This subject covers analysis of single camera narrative, single camera documentary, multi-camera drama and multi-camera magazine programs as applied to directors, writers and the production team. It extends students' ability to work with directors, writers and production skills in relation to program production, preparing them for producing and directing their final year projects.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the methodologies for analysing narrative and non fiction television
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the significance of genres of television
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the production practices and technologies used to bring television to the screen
- be able to demonstrate an understanding how to research minority groups in society
- be able to demonstrate an understanding the various script formats and writing for different television genres
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate script analysis processes to their own productions
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of directing skills and working productively with actors and production personnel
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of television broadcast censorship and regulations
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the concept of realism applied to television productions and how kinds of realism can be achieved

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Television text and television narratives - Genres of television - Skills of pitching, production planning, production scheduling, shooting and post production of programmes - Representation of gender and minority groups - Television censorship and regulations - Developing program structures for different television genres through story development, script treatment, script format and character development - Script analysis and the relationship between script and screen - Directing and the relationships between director, actor, production and post production personnel - Television realities
