Abstract:
In University Approaches to Leadership and Management you will explore the contemporary higher education context and its external environment and then relate this back to key issues and challenges facing leaders and managers in Charles Sturt University (the internal environment).
Key themes include:
- exploring contemporary issues relevant to the leadership and management of people and to managing resources
- examining service delivery policies and strategies in the context of the changing learning organization
- developing the leadership and management knowledge and skills of current and aspiring middle and senior managers within the University
- utilizing the experiences and expertise of participants to explore the theory and practice of leadership within the CSU context and also the Australian and global higher education environments.
This subject aims to develop the leadership and management knowledge and skills of current and aspiring middle and senior managers within the University.

Enrolment restrictions:
Available only to applicants who are at least at Academic Level "B" or at the level of Higher Education Worker 7, or equivalent.
All applicants must have a recommendation from their supervisory manager.
Applicants must provide (in no more than 500 words) justification for their undertaking of the subject (a) for personal professional growth and development and
(b) how the subject will enhance their capacity to contribute to effective and efficient management and leadership within the University.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to discuss the contemporary higher education context;
- be able to identify and explain the issues and challenges associated with leadership and management in the University;
- be able to reflect critically on leadership and management theories, issues, trends and styles;
- be able to plan, implement and evaluate appropriate service delivery strategies that align with the University’s mission, values and strategic plan;
- be able to plan and apply effective human resource management strategies in the context of University policies and divisional/school objectives;
- be able to explain University policies and systems relevant to resource management; and
- be able to plan and negotiate resource requirements and manage resources to achieve institutional goals and meet accountability requirements.

Module 3: Pursuing the university vision; contributions of management and leadership
1. Relationships between visions, plans, teaching, research and community engagement
2. University approaches to management and leadership
3. Processes of individual and organizational improvement
Module 4: Managing people, clients and university leadership
1. Leadership and the change process: transforming and realigning organizational cultures
2. Managing people and leadership
3. Academic, professional and workplace teams
4. Management and leadership and client relationships
Module 5: Frameworks for effective leadership and management
1. Managerial processes: planning, organizing, leading and controlling
2. Organizational planning: corporate, divisional/school and unit level. Linking this with vision
3. Developing business plans
4. Organizing and managing resources: human, financial, facilities, technological and intellectual
5. Leadership development for the future: assessing leadership potential, enhancing leadership capacity, developing strategies and succession planning

Module 6: Where to from here?
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 4 day residential school.
There are two compulsory residential schools which will introduce the content and requirements of the subject and its significance to participants as current and future managers and leaders of the University. They also initiate the assessment scheme.
