Abstract:
This subject builds on the knowledge, skills and capacities developed in the subject ULM511 by enhancing participant understanding and appreciation of university governance and its relationship to effective university strategic leadership and strategic management. The subject develops a further understanding of Australian public universities as statutory corporations and the roles and responsibilities of university governance mechanisms and the relationship with management decisions and leadership. It includes an analysis of core strategies in addressing known and unknown "futures" through strategic leadership processes such as, analysing the internal and external environment, development of vision and strategies linked with the University's strategic planning processes, human resource planning and development, risk management, capacity and leadership development.
The subject also examines the leadership role, responsibilities and capacities of a university's governance mechanism to steer a university towards longer term outcomes. Emergent issues for leadership and management are identified and explored.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to analyse contemporary issues relevant to university governance and strategic leadership and management;
- possess a greater knowledge and appreciation of university governance and its close relationship with leadership and strategic management;
- be able to critique corporate governance and appreciate its relationship with university governance in the context of the changing learning organisation;
- be able to reflect and possess an overview of the strategic management process and its importance in responding to dynamic and complex internal (CSU) and external environments;
- be able to critique the differences and similarities of leadership and management, analyse the strategies and skills of current and aspiring middle and senior managers within the University;
- be able to utilise the experiences and expertise of participants to analyse the theory and practice of university governance and strategic leadership within the CSU context and also the Australian and global higher education environments.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- An overview of the contemporary higher education context;
- An overview of the issues and challenges associated with leadership and management in the University within the framework of a university governance and strategic management focus;
- A framework of university governance as a concept, theory and process;
- Outline the influence of contemporary corporate governance trends on university governance;
- Analyse the relationship between governance and strategic leadership within a university context;
- Provide an overview of governance and strategic leadership and management theories, issues, trends and styles;
- Illustrate the planning, implementation and evaluation of appropriate service delivery strategies that align with the University’s mission, values and strategic plan;
- Illustrate the processes employed in governance mechanisms in steering a public Australian university in meeting its statutory obligations; and
- Analyse core strategies in addressing known and unknown “futures” through such strategic leadership processes such as SWOT and scenario analyses, human resource planning and development, risk management, project development and management and also working with teams within a University context.
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 2 day residential school.
The residntial school aims to provide participants with the opportunity to
*experience direct engagement with university leaders and managers in the core areas of governance, and strategic leadership and management;
*present an analytical and reflective assessable assignment to an assessment panel which includes representatives of the Senior Exectutive Group.
