CSU Discipline Area: Design and Visual Production (DSVIS)

Abstract:

This subject focuses on the art of special effects and explores the creative talents responsible for imaginative visual realisation. The subject will investigate the diverse history, theory and practice of special effects that demonstrate success and failure, realistic/unrealistic aesthetics, problem-solving skills, creative potential and technical innovation in informational, artistic, educational and entertainment contexts.

Assumed Knowledge:

Upon enrolling in this subject it is expected that the student has completed VFX102 Multimedia Authoring Concepts and demonstrated their artistic merit with technical proficiency in producing broadcast-compatible film/video. Students are advised to undertake VFX106 3D Animation if they are not capable of creating animated 3D imagery and VFX205 Digital Compositing if they are unable to create photorealistic video composites.

Enrolment restrictions:

Not available to students who have already completed MPI209 .

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate the theory and practical aspects of special effects
- be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of various applications of visual effects for internet, television, movie or related graphic design
- be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the software and hardware employed in the special effect industry
- be able to demonstrate an appreciation of the creative potential of special effects based multimedia

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- History and appreciation of special effects
- Production pipelines and workflow
- Optical and digital visual effects
- Problem-solving and efficient solutions
