This subject introduces students to current and contemporary photographic practice by means of a series of case-studies of photographers and other artists who use photography in their work, selected from Australia and around the world to show a range of theoretical and social concerns

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify and discuss a range of contemporary photographers from different countries
- be able to employ current concepts of analysis
- be able to recognise and explain regional and international trends
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the social and cultural functions of photographic activity
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Weekly case-studies of contemporary photographers and other artists who use photography in their work, selected to represent at least four different regions and a range of styles and approaches: - Contemporary photography in Australia and New Zealand (eg. Bill Henson, Tracy Moffatt, Jason South) - Contemporary photography in Asia (eg. Kyoichi Tsuzuki, Miyako Ishiuchi) - Contemporary photography in Europe (eg. Steve McQueen, Zoobs, Hellen van Meene, Wolfgang Tillmans, Dinos and Jake Chapman) - Contemporary photography in the Americas (eg. Jeff Wall, Spencer Tunick)
