Abstract:

This subject introduces the principles and applications of typography and its relationship with images in the context of both web and print. Students will explore expression and communication opportunities of type and image in the digital design environment.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

understand the principles of designing with type and image;
design and layout for a variety of publishing outcomes;
demonstrate a critical approach to design information;
understand the use of and employ computers in the field of design;
work independently on digital design problems;
competently deliver information in a seminar.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

introduction to typography; selection and uses of typefaces, colour, type and image combinations to reinforce communication; contemporary technology and production practices; file sizes, formats and saving options for specific usage; the hierarchy of information and it's role in the design solution ; readability and legibility; presentation techniques; transmission of materials in a digital format; occupational health & safety issues.
