CSU Discipline Area: Design and Visual Production (DSVIS)

Abstract:
This subject reflects upon the histories, theories and practices in the field of design since 1945 to the present, in order to understand the development of divergent approaches to contemporary design from the designer's perspective. Within this context a variety of broad themes and issues will be addressed. A number of focused design investigations will be undertaken to address various theories of aesthetics and function in contemporary design practice.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- demonstrate a knowledge of the major developments in the history of design in Europe, United Kingdom, North America and Australia from World War 2 to the present;
- be conversant with issues surrounding the relationship between designs by individual studio designers, designs of the major design houses internationally and the commercial industry
- show an understanding of the relationship between design developments and developments in the wider fields of arts practice under influence of Modernism and Postmodernism
- recognise and articulate the relationship between their own design and practice and that of the wider field within the discipline.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- the designer as originator of idiosyncratic singular forms - the designer's role in relation to changing social, political and economic cultural contexts internationally - the role of the designer and collaborator in mass production and the influence and significance of the leading designers in the fields of jewellery; graphic design; costume and set design for theatre and film; architecture and interiors; illustration and multimedia.
