Continuing students should consult the SAL for current offering details: VSC114

Where differences exist between the Handbook and the SAL, the SAL should be taken as containing the correct subject offering details.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

1. Be able to use epidemiological terms to describe herd level parameters and
disease outbreaks.
2. Be able to determine the best approach to sample a population to estimate
parameters and the presence of disease.
3. Be able to describe the use, accuracy and reliability and interpretation of
diagnostic tests.
4. Be able to identify the difference in design of experimental studies and
select the most appropriate for particular disease conditions.
5. Be able to describe the application of the probability theory to
epidemiological problems.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

1. Introduction to Quantitative Epidemiology
2. Measuring a disease
3. Sample size and variation
4. Diagnostic test characteristics
