Abstract:

The subject Population Medicine and Public Health extends and builds on the studies of disease management and food safety commenced in Population Medicine 1, Public Health and Biosecurity and continued in Population Medicine 2.  Principles of epidemiology and public health are explored, with a focus on zoonoses and food safety, along with the integration of disease management into a variety of settings. These principles are demonstrated through cases in animals and humans, with consideration of the vet’s role in the investigation and control of zoonotic disease in humans and legislative and regulatory issues relating to food safety and international trade. For entry into laboratory-based subjects, where there will be a health and safety risk if students do not possess essential prerequisite laboratory skills.
