Abstract:
The primary purpose of this subject is the study of social welfare practice by means of couselling and casework. This subject will examine some major contemporay theories and their impact on practice. It also examines work and case management practices, at individual and team levels. Intervieiwng and introductory counselling skills will be developed.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Be able to demonstrate a critical knowledge of some major contemporary case theories and the skills which are derived from them;
Be able to identify some work management practices at individual and team levels;
Be able to demonstrate a basic competence in interviewing and introductory case management
Be able to demonstrate developing skills as a result of microskills counselling and other training in the following areas:
. interviewing, information gathering, assessment, attending and influencing;
. problem solving;
. preparing and writing a full case history in depth;
. conducting an analysis of an interview;
. reflective thinking upon your own performance
