Abstract:
This subject describes the health and community services industry in which Youth Work is located. In particular it will analyse how each government department of Education, Health, Welfare and Employment defines "youth"/"adolescents" reflecting its own bureaucratic function. Students will explore how these frameworks contribute to the type of youth work promoted and funded by each government department. They will analyse critically how this situation results in the complexity of service provision and service delivery in the area of youth work.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Be able to understand the nature of the Community Service Industry and its relationship to Youth Work
Be able to understand the definitions of youth used by Education, Health, Welfare, and Employment bureaucracies and how this effects the funding of youth work programs
Be aware of how youth work programs intersect with each other
Be able to assess the extent of systems abuse within the youth work field

Bureaucratic Departments involved in Youth Programs and bureaucratic and political definitions of Youth Youth Work and the Community Service Industry Education Departments and Students Health Departments and Adolescents Welfare Departments and Youth Employment / Training Departments and Young People Juvenile Justice Departments and Young Offenders Intersection and Co-ordination of Youth Services Systems Abuse and Falling through the 'Safety Net
