Abstract:

This subject examines the practical dimensions of case management including the process, roles, organisational contexts and models of case management. The subject also introduces the theories underlying individual and family work in social welfare with an emphasis on integrating theory and practice.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to define case management and differentiate it from casework
Be able to identify different functions and models of case management
Understand the roles and responsibilities of a case manager
Be able to discuss a variety of social welfare theories
Understand the underlying philosophies of these theories
Understand the different cases in which these theories should be applied.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Definition of case management and casework Roles and responsibilities of the case manager Organisational context of case management Models of case management Theories of practice including problem solving, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, existential and humanistic, narrative therapy, advocacy and brokerage, radical and feminist.
