Abstract:

This subject introduces students to social and welfare elements of disability. It will allow students to develop a knowledge of how social processes contribute to the marginalisation of people with disabilities. It also examines diversity in disability. It looks at policy and program development, examines philosophical change in the disability field, and covers areas such as advocacy, employment, recreation, education and rehabilitation. It also examines institutional factors which mediate disability.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Understand different models of disability;
Understand the social processes of labelling, stereotyping and discrimination as they pertain to disability;
Understand the diverse nature of disability;
Understand social and policy change as it impacts on people with disabilities and disability service provision;
Understand current issues in a variety of spheres of life for people with disabilities, including advocacy, employment education and recreation;
Understand how diverse social factors such as gender, ethnicity, Aboriginality, sexuality and age interact with disability;
Understand how the complex institutional structures, including the health care and rehabilitation industries mediate disability.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Models of disability Disability and human diversity Disability, disadvantage and marginalisation The evolution in disability philosophy, legislation and service provision Disability and the institutional framework of intervention.
