Abstract:
This subject draws together the key professional issues pertinent to genetic counselling practice and does so in a context of active engagement in supervised clinical practice, reflective analysis, and critical ethical and theoretical application. All students are required to complete the practicum of at least 156 hours in an appropriate agency with qualified clinical supervision.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to critically analyse and discuss the key issues impinging on current genetic counselling practice
- be able to critically analyse and discuss the role of the genetic counsellor in the context of the modern health care system
- be able to describe the role and function of the agency(ies) in the provision of genetic counselling and other services of which genetic counselling is an integral part
- be able to perform a broad range of counselling and casework skills in a relevant agency under supervision to a level of competence suitable for non-complex cases and equivalent to a new graduate practitioner including: interviewing, information gathering, pedigree construction, assessment, attending and influencing, problem solving; preparing and writing a case history and case plan to a level acceptable to the Genetic Counselling Board of Censors; planning and conducting interviews under supervision and critically analysing the casework process
- be able to identify ethical issues that arise for genetic counsellors in practice and generate appropriate ways to resolve these
- be able to apply values of the unique worth of individuals and their right to self-determination within the counselling relationship
- be able to think reflectively on their performance in work with clients and fellow team members and take positive action to improve practice and professional conduct
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Students are required to complete at least 156 hours of clinical practice in an appropriate agencies under qualified clinical supervision. A preparation for practicum plan is a pre-requisite for proceeding onto a placement and individual learning plans will be developed in accordance with Genetic Counselling Board of Censors Guidelines.
