Abstract:
This subject provides the theoretical and practice skills necessary for students who will specialise in health based counselling. It covers ethics, skills and strategies compatible with major theoretical counselling frameworks. It deals with counselling techniques relevant to working with children, couples and families, people with disabilities, or from diverse cultural and ethnic groups. It also identifies the special requirements for working with people at different stages of the life cycle.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify and critically discuss at least three major counselling theories
- be able to demonstrate basic counselling skills
- be able to demonstrate appropriate techniques for use with diverse clients
- be able to critically analyse ethical issues in counselling practice
- be able to accurately give feedback to colleagues on their clinical practice
- be able to reflect on their own practice and develop strategies to enhance clinical practice skills
Syllabus:

- Theories in counselling - Values and ethics in counselling practice - Fundamental counselling skills - The self in counselling practice - Working with children - Working with couples - Working with families - Working with people from different cultures and ethnic groups - Working with people who have disabilities
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school.
Case and problem based learning methods to strengthen basic counselling skills and application.
