WRT210 Writing for Publication (8)

Abstract:

This subject provides students with writing experience focussed on new work such as poetry or short fiction. It allows students opportunities to develop their writing skills and capacities in the genre(s) of their choice. Practising writers will be involved in the classes and will be available for editorial advice.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Have acquired compositional skills and knowledge by working on a number of pieces of new writing in the genre(s) of their specialisation
Have developed skills in editing and analysing their work
Have demonstrated their understanding of marketplace requirements for publishing new work in the area of their specialisation.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

writing exercises focussing on genre-specific as well as common features of writing autobiographical, documentary and experimental techniques 'fictional' foci such as narrative, character, metaphor, style and structure 'poetic' foci such as formal shape, figurative language, style and performance examination and critique of appropriate publication outlets and venues communication with, and submission to, publication outlets.
