Abstract:

This subject focuses exclusively on one television format, that of television drama series. By learning about and writing one episode tailored to the specific, more sophisticated demands of this format, students will extend their industry knowledge and their creative abilities as well as their professional approach to the craft of screenwriting in all its formats.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

-be able to describe the series TV format
-be able to demonstrate their understanding of dramatic structure and pace
-be able to demonstrate their conceptual skills in relation to television drama series
-be able to demonstrate their skills in writing synopses and treatments
-have devised an appropriate environment and premise for their own series.
-have created a back story, dynamic characters, themes and issues for their own series
-have developed the skills needed to interweave main and subsidiary stories
-have written one original episode for their own television drama series

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

-conceptual and creative components of a successful television drama series(story premise, environment, themes and issues, characterisation, narrative, plot points, pace and dialogue -audience expectations and timeslots -relevant TV scripts and videos -current series drama -production and crafting process of television drama series
