Abstract:

Students will prepare and defend in writing a detailed research proposal including a literature review, methodology and budget in preparation for the research conducted in the dissertation subject WSC502 Advanced Viticulture/Oenology Dissertation or WSC503 Viticulture/Oenology Dissertation. The proposal will include relevant CSU ethics approval.

Enrolment restrictions:

enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Master of Viticulture and Oenology

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate their ability to work as an independent researcher.

They will do this by
(a)identifying a research topic,
(b)developing a testable hypothesis,
and
(c)developing a detailed research plan.
The research plan developed in WSC501 will be executed as part of either WSC502 or WSC503.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Identifying the key steps in research planning. - Identifying a general field of research, including the issue to be investigated in the research project. - Writing a testable hypothesis that will form the basis of the research activities. - Writing a literature review on the topic of the research proposal. And how to develop a detailed research proposal covering: (a) The experiment (or series of experiments) that will be used to test the research hypothesis. (b) Detailed description of the experimental procedure to be followed in each of the experiments. (c) Details of all materials required for the research project. (d) Details of the analytical techniques to be used in the experiments being undertaken. (e) Statistically sound experimental design for the experiment (or experiments). (f) Time table for the research project. (g) Budget for the research project. -If necessary, prepare and submit an ethics approval application to the appropriate CSU ethics committee.
