Admission criteria

Internal applicants

Admission to the course is based on UAI scores obtained in the NSW Higher School Certificate and on an assessment of a questionnaire, essays and portfolio submitted by the applicant.

The principal criteria used to assess applications are:

Non-school leaver applicants, and students completing courses at other universities, are also admitted to the course. These students are admitted using the criteria listed above. The course has also admitted students who have completed various diplomas in communication or media at TAFE or private institutions and these are admitted under the above criteria.

International Students

Applicants must have been awarded the appropriate diploma at the time of admission and achieve a satisfactory English standard (IELTS Band 6; TOEFL 550).

All applicants must also complete the School of Communication's admission questionnaire and essay, and, if necessary, complete an interview with the Course Coordinator.

Credit

An Articulation Agreement was entered into with Bathurst TAFE in 2006 (for implementation from 2007) whereby students who complete appropriate subjects in the TAFE Diploma of Media and Communication Studies are eligible to have their studies credited toward 64 credit points of the Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) degree.

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 192 points.

Course structure

The course consists of fifteen core subjects (144 points) comprising one (1) politics subject, five (5) communication subjects (one of which is 16 points), seven (7) journalism subjects (two of which are 16 points), together with one compulsory journalism subject in either the print or broadcast strand (8 points) and, in addition, four (4) restricted electives, one of which must be chosen in each of Sessions 3 and 4 from a list of Group 1 (knowledgebased) subjects and one of which must be chosen in each of Sessions 3 and 4 from either the Group 1 list or from a list of Group 2 (skillsbased) subjects (for a total 32 points). The restricted electives are grouped in this way to ensure that the broad educational grounding typical of an Arts degree is maintained in the course while still allowing limited opportunities for vocationallyspecific skills development.
