Admission criteria
* It is each student's responsibility to have his or her undergraduate qualification officially assessed by the relevant employing authority.
Canada Cohort:
To meet the needs of the Ontario context, applicants for the Bachelor of Primary Education Studies must hold a Bachelor's degree or a 4 year Applied degree.
The course's current admissions policies are designed to ensure that applicants have a sincere interest, background and focus on working with primary-junior age children. Selection is based on the following:
50% weighting - academic achievement
- Typically a minimum academic average of 70% (B/B-) on the best 10 full courses or equivalent in a university undergraduate program at the time of application;
- Where additional study in a post graduate or other university study is more recent than an applicant's undergraduate degree, these courses will be considered as part of the best 10 full courses;
- Preference will be given to applicants who have successfully completed French, math or science subjects as part of their undergraduate degree.
50% weighting - experiential learning
- Directly related to teaching such as volunteering or assistance in schools; or indirectly related teaching, such as coaching or recreational camps.
- References related to experiences and personal attributes will also be considered.
The 50/50 admissions policy reflects the reality that candidates will have to prove themselves both academically (50% of admissions requirements) and experientially (50% of admissions requirements) to be successful primary junior teachers. Applicants are asked to complete an Experiential Learning Summary chart outlining the experiences which have contributed to their understanding of the learning and teaching process. As well, applicants are asked to explain in writing what they have come to understand about children as learners and the learning and teaching process, based on their experiences. Finally, two reference letters from referees who have actually observed the applicant working with this age of child are required. All of this information is factored into the 50% experiential weighting.
All international students must demonstrate an acceptable level of English proficiency to gain admission to Charles Sturt University. However, if you have completed formal studies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the USA, you have satisfied CSU's English proficiency admission requirement.

Course structure
CANADA COHORT
Foundation Education Studies
These subjects provide theoretical, social and educational contexts for students, make links between them and school structures and classroom practices, and focus more generally on issues of professional practice.
Subjects in this area are:
EED 450 Foundations 1: Child Development and Classroom Management
EPT 450 Foundations 2: Practicum Seminar
ESS 450 Foundations 3: Inclusive Education and the Law
EPT 451 Foundations 4: Practicum Seminar
Curriculum Studies
These subjects link discipline knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, curriculum statements, planning educational experiences and the procedural knowledge associated with implementing these experiences to a diverse range of students. Students take a subject in each of the six curriculum areas in the primary school - language and literacy, mathematics, science and technology, social studies, health and physical education, and the arts.
These subjects are strongly linked, through the problem-based approach used, to the on-going in school experience that is provided throughout the program. This structure not only adds to the depth and authenticity of the professional experience, it also provides the students with the opportunity to develop a strong rapport with a cohort of children over an extended period of time thereby increasing the likelihood of the development of rich learning tasks that cater for the needs of individual students in their classes.
Subjects in this area are:
EML 450: Language and Literacy
EMM 450: Mathematics
EMR 450: Health and Physical Education
EMA 450: The Arts
EMH 450: Social Studies
EMS 450: Science and Technology
Practicum
The Practicum provides professional opportunities to learn about and apply the range of theoretical, conceptual, and procedural knowledge developed in the other courses in the program. The practicum is the opportunity for candidates to make explicit their capacity to discern connections between theory and practice e.g. their praxis.
Students will complete a minimum of 45 days of Block Practicum experience, split into four weeks in Term 1 in one school/division and five weeks in Term 2 in an additional school/division. They will also spend 2 days of every additional week of the semester in their Host Schools. This time in schools provides an opportunity for students to explore concepts, resources and strategies introduced in the academic component of the program.
Importantly, the students will complete block Practicum experiences with the same class they visit during the weekly program. This structure adds to the depth and authenticity of the professional experience program, and provides the students with the opportunity to develop a strong rapport with a cohort of children over an extended period of time - increasing the likelihood of the development of rich learning tasks that cater for the needs of individuals in these classes.

Professional recognition
To be offered in Ontario Canada, the separate approvals of the relevant Ontario Ministry and the Ontario College of Teachers were required.
The Ministry gave its approval on 24 December 2004 for CSU to operate as a university in Ontario. This approval was for 5 years. A renewal of consent has been initiated including a self-study of the Bachelor of Primary Education Studies (Canada Cohort). The relevant documentation of the current iteration of the course was submitted to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and University in March 2009.
The Bachelor of Primary Education Studies was initially accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers for a two year term in the spring of 2004. Accreditation was successfully renewed for a five year term through a very rigorous process in May of 2007. The OCT Standards of Practice and the Ethical Standards as well as fifteen specific requirements were used as the basis for this accreditation. The evidence of data was collated and triangulated by the OCT accreditation panel and resulted in a successful process that accredited the course with no conditions or recommendations. The Review Panel Final Report concluded that the '..Bachelor of Primary Education Studies offered in Ontario fully satisfies the requirements for accreditation' (Accreditation Panel Final Report, May 14, 2007, P32). Current accreditation is for a 7 year period to 31 May 2014.
