Normal course duration
Full-time 3 years (6.0 sessions)
A standard credit package of 96 points will apply for a previously completed relevant undergraduate degree that meets NSWIT content/discipline requirements. Students who do not meet the NSWIT requirements will receive proportionally less credit - based on the number of additional subjects required to meet accreditation.
Admission criteria
Admission to the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) Graduate Entry will be based on the student having successfully completed a relevant undergraduate degree at a recognised tertiary institution.
Admission to the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) Integrated Mode will be only available through one of the double degree programs of which it is a constituent course. Admission to the program will be through UAC and VTAC systems. Some students may be admitted through the Koori Admission program and the Principal's Early Recommendation Scheme.
NSW Institute of Teachers is the accrediting body for teacher education programs in NSW. In order to satisfy entry requirements, students are required to have NSW HSC English minimum Band 4 (Standard, English as a Second Language or Advanced). Where an applicant does not meet this entry requirement, CSU will provide support to ensure the student satisfies this requirement for the purposes of accreditation.
Credit
Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) Graduate Entry
Upon admission students are awarded 96 points of entry level credit in recognition of prior completed relevant undergraduate bachelor's degree. Students who do not meet the NSWIT requirements will receive proportionally less credit - based on the number of additional subjects required to meet accreditation.
This credit is represented on academic transcripts as:
- EDU09C Entry Level Discipline Credit - 96 subject points (indicating no additional study is required to support their teaching area)
If students require additional discipline subjects (maximum of two) to meet NSWIT accreditation requirements then the following credit package will apply:
- EDU88C Entry Level Discipline Credit - 88 credit points (indicating 1 further subject is required to support teaching area)
- EDU80C Entry Level Discipline Credit - 80 subject points(indicating 2 further subjects are required to support teaching area)
Additionally, students may be granted up to a maximum of four additional subjects credit from the set of twelve core Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) subjects based upon additional graduate entry studies.
Credit will only be granted for subjects where a student has completed previous equivalent graduate entry subjects at another institution.
In order for a student to gain credit for a professional experience, the applicant must demonstrate to the Director, Professional Experience Unit that the completed task was indeed equivalent to a practicum, that is, the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) had provided the student with an opportunity to satisfy the requirements of a typical practicum. Typically, that would require the pre-service teacher to demonstrate that she/he has developed the skills, knowledge and understanding of the role of a teacher through:
- systematic observation of colleague's teaching and professional dialogue about such observations;
- teaching in a classroom in a collaborative role with an experienced colleague;
- the development of structured teaching and learning materials that are systematically evaluated;
- the development of a professional portfolio;
- discussion of personal teacher development with a supervising colleague on a regular basis;
- engagement in professional dialogue with independent (university) personnel;
- formal assessment of teaching competence by a supervising teacher.
Any student who is conditionally employed within a secondary school setting and is successful in gaining Professional Experience Credit then this credit will only apply to EPT441 Professional Experience 1. It is a course requirement that students must complete practicum in two diverse settings, as such, the student must then complete EPT442 Professional Experience 2 practicum requirements at a different school setting.
Any student who completed practica as part of another incomplete degree may apply to have that practicum recognised as equivalent in the same manner that they would apply for credit for other subjects.
For the double degree programs listed below no special credit arrangements apply.

Course structure
The Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) course structure consists of a total of 24 subjects (192 credit points), comprising:
- a core of twelve Education subjects; and,
- twelve discipline subjects (credited as entry level credit based upon initial undergraduate qualification).
The core of twelve Education subjects will be organised as follows:
- Education Studies- 7 subjects;
- Professional Experience - 2 subjects;
- Curriculum Studies - 2 subjects; and,
- Option - 1 subject.
For Double Degree Students, the Discipline subjects will be organised as follows:
- Major Studies - 8 subjects; and,
- Electives - 4 subjects.
In the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) Graduate Entry, a standard credit package of a maximum of 96 credit points (12 subjects) will be given based on the applicant's undergraduate degree in a teaching related discipline. Consequently, students in the Graduate Entry mode will be required to complete the core of 12 Education subjects (96 credit points) as specified in the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) structure mentioned above.
For the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) Integrated Mode (the double degree courses), students complete all the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) course requirements in and through each double degree that uses the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) as a constituent degree.

EPT441 Professional Experience 1
EPT442 Professional Experience 2
4. OPTION
The option allows students to elect one education based subject. Students will be limited in this selection to either one of the three elective subjects below, or to a curriculum method subject (previously listed) that will support their development of a second teaching area. More information about secondary teaching areas is below in the NOTES section.

NOTES
Curriculum Method subjects: There are eleven (11) specialisations of the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary). The specialisation a student is accepted into will dictate which curriculum method subject/s are required. Curriculum Method 1 and Curriculum Method 2 are further designed to support students to succeed in the subjects Professional Experience 1 and 2.
Students will be allocated to the relevant specialisation of the course in accordance with the teaching area specialisation requirements set out by the NSW Institute of Teachers. The minimum requirement for most teaching area specialisations is six subjects. It is compulsory for all pre-service secondary teacher education students to complete the required minimum in at least one teaching area specialisation to qualify for employment. For double degree students, planning for this minimum requirement should be done at the beginning of the course.
Although not compulsory for all students, many seek to advance their employability by including a second teaching area specialisation as part of their program. The NSW Institute of Teachers minimum requirement for most secondary teaching areas is four subjects that conform to the teaching area’s specifications. Students have an “option” (as mentioned above) to add a secondary teaching area to the degree if they are able to satisfy the NSW Institute of Teachers’ four subject specification.
The key subjects to apply to this course from 201030 are:
EEP441 Reconceptualising Secondary Education
EED441 Constructions of Adolescence and their Educational Implications
+ Residential School
No subjects with a Residential School component have been identified in this course.
+ Workplace Learning
Enrolment pattern
