Abstract|
Agricultural economics is the application of economic principles to agriculture, if technically speaking. This definition however does not recognize the economic, social, and environmental issues addressed by the agricultural economics profession. In fact, the scope of agricultural economics goes well beyond the farm gate to encompass a broader range of food and fibre- related activity which contributes significantly to the nation's output. This subject covers an introduction to the economics of agriculture in Australia. Covers the applications of microeconomic principles to farm decision making and commodity markets, and introduces the economics of environmental and trade policies, supply chain principles and farm decision making from an economic perspective. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- describe the core principles of microeconomics, especially related to a range of agricultural productions, cost analysis and prices;
- describe how these economic principles may be applied to selected farm management problems of resourcing, financing and input use at the enterprise and whole farm levels;
- describe economic policies aspects of trade, environment and resource use;
- conduct price analyses and interpretations of supply chain management and related marketing problems.

- 1. The nature of economics and microeconomic analysis using marginalist principles,
- 2. Economics of production and costs,
- 3. Financial analysis of enterprises and the farm as an economic unit
- 4. The demand & supply for agricultural commodities
- 5. The behaviour and outlook of prices and production in agricultural commodity markets incorporating the influence of trade
- 6. Principles of supply chain organisation
- 7. Economics of trade and trade policy
- 8. Economics for analysis environmental issues
