Abstract

This subject introduces students to the holistic nature of agribusiness industries from both an Australian and a global perspective. A supply/value chain approach is taken as a way of studying the components of and the interrelationships between resources, functions and processes and consumer products of agribusiness systems. Emphasis is placed on identifying issues affecting the sustainability of agribusiness systems in a dynamic global environment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to explain, using current examples, the role and importance of Australian agricultural industries in terms of global trade and the Australian economy;
  • Be able to identify and discuss issues critical to the development and management of Australian agribusiness industries;
  • Be able to examine livestock and agronomic/horticultural industries from a value chain perspective;
  • Be able to select the critical success points within a livestock and agronomic/horticultural value chain;
  • Be able to select the correct production or processing methods along the supply chain that are able to influence product quality;
  • Be able to acurately describe the various specifications used in the production and marketing of livestock and agronomic/horticultural products;
  • Be able to demonstrate distinguishing factors that contribute to consumer satisfaction associated with livestock and agronomic/horticultural products;
  • Be able to discuss the key sustainability and economic issues affecting livestock and agronomic/horticultural systems.

- Consumer focused approach to agribusiness industries
- Value chain thinking
- Australian farming systems
- The structure, organisation and performance of selected major Australian agribusiness industries
- Major issues impacting on the success of Australian agribusiness industries
- New and emerging industries
- Critical success factors and relationships within the value chain
- An introduction to the role of technology in agriculture.
