Abstract

This subject describes the knowledge and skills required for a child care worker to establish, manage and monitor the implementation of a safe and healthy environment when working with children. The application of skills and knowledge described in this unit relates to the health and safety of children in a variety of child care contexts.

Enrolment restrictions

Prior to enrolment students must have completed the Certificate III Children’s Services AND Stage One of the Diploma of Children’s Services (AQF 5) through TAFE Western and Riverina Institute.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • have adequate knowledge of regulations surrounding health, safety, supervision, and hygiene as well as be able to implement strategies to ensure they are met;
  • be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of dangers and hazards and be able to identify and reduce risk of potential hazards to children, including traffic and the spread of infectious diseases and cross infection;
  • make informed and appropriate decisions under pressure to ensure the safety of children, including in the home environment, and in particular;
  • have a thorough knowledge of indicators of different types of child abuse and know how to implement the child protection policy of service;
  • assist develop and maintain organisation standards, policies and procedures relating to health and safety;
  • have ways of supervising appropriate to the age of the child;
  • show understanding of developmental stage appropriate toys and equipment;
  • possess strategies for developing responsible behaviour by children in cars and buses;
  • display common childhood illnesses recognition, management strategies; and,
  • demonstrate employability skills i.e. application of skills in decision-making under pressure.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Assess and improve the safety of environments
  • Coordinate the response to accidents and emergencies
  • Plan and monitor supervision
  • Promote hygiene and safety practices
  • Promote appropriate practices to respond to illnesses
  • Monitor travel and excursions
  • Provide guidance to workers when abuse is identified or investigated
  • Monitor care provided by others
