ELN402 Literacy Strategies for Learning (8)

Abstract

Graduate teachers need to know and understand literacy teaching strategies that are particular to their content area and the stage of learning of their students. This subject addresses knowledge and application of those strategies in the middle years of schooling. The subject is informed by (1) theoretical perspectives on teaching literacies in content areas and (2) contemporary approaches to teaching literacies in the middle years. The subject encompasses practical strategies for literacy learning and use, especially in relation to written, spoken and visual texts that are subject-specific. Strategies include practices with digital technologies and texts.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • know the subject-specific literacy practices of their teaching areas;
  • be able to employ a range of strategies for literacy instruction in those;
  • know how to sequence strategies to scaffold effective literacy;
  • be confident to teach about texts and practices with those; and
  • have facility with using digital technologies for literacy development in content areas.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • understanding literacies as social and cultural practices
  • curriculum literacies for content areas
  • principles for effective curriculum literacies instruction
  • pedagogical strategies for teaching literacy in content areas
  • selecting and sequencing strategies to scaffold literacy
  • incorporating strategies effectively into lessons
  • texts and their purposes
  • strategies for assessment of curriculum literacies
  • digital practices for literacy development
  • adapting instruction to support those learning English as an additional language or dialect
