EML446 Curriculum Method 2: Languages (LOTE) (8)

Abstract

This subject expands upon the fundamentals of teaching LOTE developed in EML445. It is concerned with the development of LOTE programs to meet syllabus demands in the context of broader educational and social issues. It focuses on developing greater cross-cultural awareness and competence through consideration of key concepts in intercultural communication and key issues in languages pedagogy through a 'language as culture' perspective.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- have an approved awareness and capacity for intercultural language teaching;
- appreciate the worth and significance of LOTE in the curriculum areas;
- teach in an environment of multiliteracies;
- appreciate the contribution of indigenous and immigrant communities manifest through LOTE learning;
- engage with contemporary language and cultural issues reflected in local policy contexts; and,
- critically review the place of LOTE in the school curriculum.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Classroom practices and theory in teaching culture. - Development of further skills in programming units of work and related issues of assessment and evaluation. - Critical examination of the place of non-dominant languages in schooling and society. - The nature and relevance of LOTE in the curriculum areas. - LOTE education and the management of critical issues.
