EMM210 Mathematics in the Primary Years (8)

Abstract

This subject will develop your understanding of and ability to undertake inquiry/investigative mathematics and plan for students in the middle and later years of primary school to learn through inquiry in mathematics. You will develop strong pedagogical content knowledge for your teaching through both an understanding of research and theory and practice, and be working with curriculum and other documents to plan learning trajectories for primary school children.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be competent and confident in solving a range of mathematical problems and be able to reflect effectively on their practice of learning mathematics through investigative/inquiry approaches;
  • be able to map how concepts develop in children and how investigation facilitates the development of mathematical proficiencies associated with learning of concepts in number;
  • be able to plan investigative, interactive learning experiences that develop children's mathematical proficiencies in geometry and measurement in middle and upper primary school;
  • be able to elaborate on diverse assessment approaches in mathematics and incorporate these into planning for learning, recording, and reporting on students' learning in the areas of middle and upper primary school;
  • be able to link investigations that facilitate the development of mathematical proficiencies associated with learning of concepts in probability and statistics to the learning of number and to using ICTs appropriately for mathematical development.
