EMR105 Health and Physical Education Studies (8)

Abstract

In this subject students will learn about the areas of health and physical education: physical education studies and health studies such as healthy eating, sexual health, safety, drug education, child protection education, interpersonal relationships, physical activity and healthy choices. Students will reflect on and build their personal perspectives and positions related to the educational value of HPE, and their beliefs and ideals for an HPE educator. Students will participate in learning experiences to explore and communicate existing and new discipline specific knowledge and skills related to the nominated areas in order to improve their own learning in the subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • have participated in practice-based situations which will include problem-based learning, peer learning projects, role plays and practical classes;
  • have examined the areas of physical education studies including human movement studies, fundamental movement skills, motor development, skill acquisition, physical activity (modes, levels, types), gymnastics core themes, movement themes in relation to childhood health, education and physical activity lifelong participation;
  • have explored categories of literature (including research-evidence, government and department developed and industry produced documents) related to areas of academic study in health and physical education studies and be able to explain key aspects and research in those the areas;
  • have examined the areas of health studies such as healthy eating, sexual health, safety, drug education, child protection education, interpersonal relationships, physical activity and healthy choices in relation to childhood health, education and physical activity lifelong participation;
  • after learning about areas of academic study in health and physical education studies, be able to consider when, how and why to address these areas in childhood education;
  • be able to identify and communicate the implications for teaching health and physical education related areas in specific learning environments;
  • be able to reflect on and build positions related to i) the educational value of HPE, ii) your personal experiences and values of components of HPE, and iii) your beliefs and ideals of an ideal HPE educator;
  • understand the elements of effective professional development: relationship to educational context, appropriate content, active engagement, participants learning and achievement, and reflection and be able to prepare a Staff Professional Development Session.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Human Movement Studies which include fundamental movement skills, motor development, skill acquisition, physical activity, gymnastics core themes, movement themes;
  • health studies such as healthy eating, sexual health, safety, drug education, child protection education, interpersonal relationships, physical activity and healthy choices;
  • the educational value of HPE;
  • personal experiences and values of components of HPE
  • beliefs and ideals of an ideal HPE educator.
