EMT443 Curriculum Method 1: Information Technology (8)

Abstract

This subject explores a range of approaches to technology education in years 7-12. It aims to assist pre-service teachers to construct technology-specific lessons and to program units of study that are challenging, engaging, and supportive of student learning. Students will be introduced to practical student-centred project-based learning in technology education. Particular attention will be devoted to the implementation of relevant state technology syllabus documents, authentic pedagogies and assessment for learning in the context of secondary school technology education. Students will learn about safety, control and risk assessment in technology environments as well as strategies for the management of resources and equipment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- see ICT as a discipline - concepts and metalanguage;
- be able to critically review the content, context, and continuum of contemporary technology curricula;
- be able to define technological literacy as it relates to contemporary curriculum expectations;
- have the capacity to construct technology-focused lessons and units of study using a variety of materials, tools, and formats;
- be able to implement authentic pedagogy and assessment for learning in the context of technology-specific curricula;
- be able to evaluate software and hardware resources appropriate for teaching secondary school technology studies; and,
- be able to identify strategies for managing students and resources in a safe teaching and learning environment.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Role of technology teachers in secondary school settings. - The 7-12 technology learning continuum as expressed in syllabus documents. - Teaching 7-12 technology-specific curricula. - Information literacy pedagogies and their incorporation into technology education. - Teaching methods and curriculum organisation of technology subjects (with particular emphasis on authentic pedagogy and assessment - Problem solving, Project and Inquiry Based Learning Models). - Assessment and reporting in technology education. - Evaluation of software and hardware resources for secondary school technology education. - Classroom management and risk assessment in technology environments.
