EMT444 Curriculum Method 2: Information Technology (8)

Abstract

This subject explores a range of approaches to teaching Information technology subjects in a senior secondary school (Years 11-12). It aims to assist pre-service teachers to construct lessons and units of study that are challenging, engaging, and supportive of student learning. Particular attention will be devoted to the implementation of relevant state syllabus documents, quality teaching strategies and assessment for learning. In NSW these documents refer to two syllabi, namely, Information Processes and Technology (IPT) and Software Design and Development (SDD).

Entry into the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary), Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary), Bachelor of Education (TAS) or as determined by the course coordinator.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- critically review the function and place of Information Processes and Technology (IPT) and Software Design and Development (SDD). within the continuum of contemporary technology curricula;
- demonstrate skill in differentiating a range of approaches to teaching and learning in IPT and SDD
- develop strategies for managing and supporting students in completing IPT and SDD projects;
- construct IPT and SDD lessons and units of study using a variety of materials, tools, and formats;
- differentiate IPT and SDD teaching and learning experiences for diverse student populations;
- implement quality teaching and assessment for learning in the context of the IPT and SDD syllabi;
- evaluate software and hardware resources appropriate for teaching IPT and SDD; and,
- develop assessment tasks that will differentiate student learning according to the HSC performance bands for IPT and SDD.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Role of Information Processes and Technology (IPT) and Software Design and Development (SDD). teachers in secondary school settings. - Place of IPT and SDD in the contemporary 7-12 technology curriculum. - Strategies for managing and supporting students in completing IPT and SDD projects. - Information literacy pedagogies and their incorporation into IPT and SDD education. - Quality teaching strategies, and curriculum organisation appropriate for the Years 11-12 IPT and SDD syllabi. - Differentiating IPT and SDD instruction for diverse learners. - Assessment for learning in IPT and SDD education. - Evaluation of software and hardware resources appropriate for teaching IPT and SDD - HSC performance bands for IPT and SDD. - Technology and gender - Teaching for sustainability
